Chills went down my spine. “How horrible. She died simply because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“You were right, though.” Sam pointed to the screen. “Mary was her mother, and Blanche was her stepmother.”

I rubbed the back of my neck, thinking. The painting still didn’t make sense to me. “If she died in such a tragic event, why would anyone paint her out of the family portrait?”

“I don’t know.” Sam leaned in to read the screen again. “Maybe it was like the art restorer theorized. Maybe someone—like the stepsister—hated her and had her painted out after the parents died.”

“That’s pretty mean. And this is so frustrating. I had hoped there would be more information, and I don’t know what we do now.”

“Now we wait for your parents to get here and go have dinner. I have full confidence that you, with your historic sleuthing skills, will figure out a way we can learn more about Ivy.”

“I hope so.” I closed the laptop. “Or maybe Rodney will know something.”

Sam took my hand and gave it a squeeze. “One thing I’ve learned in dealing with computer problems is to trust my subconscious. The answer will come percolating up if you give it time. And if you administer carbs.”

“Good thing we’re going to La Villetta. Pasta should do the trick.”
